The Meaning of 'Tahlaquah' During the "Trail of Tears";

Three Cherokee Chiefs were to meet before the tribe arrived at their new Indian Reservation in Oklahoma. Only two Chiefs arrived and one is reportedly to have said to the other "Tahlequah", meaning two is enough. On that very spot is today the capital of the Cherokee Indian nation, Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Since our boat will have a crew of two, We have appropriately named her Tahlequah.

A Little About Hans Christian ;

The The Hans Christian 43 Traditional Ketch is an old design (click here for a Virtual Tour) originally built for the rough Baltic and Black Seas. She is a heavy displacement vessel weighing 23 tons, has a draft of 6.8 ft. and a beam of 13.8 ft. Her deck and cabin top is constructed of inlaid teak planking. The cockpit, caprails, toe rails, and deck storage boxes are constructed of heayv teak as well. All fittings, port holes, and binacle are made of heavy bronze or brass.

A Hans Chistian at anchor stands out in any harbor with her beautiful traditional lines, two masts, and teak brightwork. Tahlequah is hull number 128, the last of the 43 foot ketches. Hans Christians are now manufactured in Thailand according to the original specifications.

The marine architecht is Irwin Ives, Tahlequah was built in 1990 and commissioned in 1991 in her home port of San Franscisco, Ca. The original owners took good care of her, unfortunately due to health reasons were unable to sail her. We purchased and re-named her Tahlequah after taking possession of her in May, 2001.

We carefully obeyed the age old requirements set forth to satisfy the sea gods and while not having a virgin to sacrifice offered the sea gods libations and christened her from that day forth, "Tahlequah".

NOTE:

Production of the Traditional range of Hans Christian Yachts was transferred from Andersen Yachts Ltd to Pantawee Marine Co., Ltd in November, 2004.

Pantawee Marine Co., Ltd is a wholly owned family boat building business located on the Eastern Seaboard of Thailand near the resort city of Pattaya and was established by Jack Hall and his wife Jum in 1986.

Jack Hall managed the yard that manufactured Hans Christian Yachts (Andersen Yachts Ltd) from 1996 to 2004 and brings with him vast knowledge and experience in producing the range of Hans Christian Yachts. Several other key staff have also joined Pantawee Marine Co., Ltd including the master carpenters who will continue the teak woodworking legacy that is synonymous with the famous Hans Christian name.

The mechanical, plumbing and electrical system installations are supervised by American Marine Engineer Mr. Paul Back who has been a Thai resident of 36 years with many of those years associated with the construction of Hans Christian Yachts.

Specifications for the respective models remain unchanged and prospective owners can expect the same workmanship and quality that has been handed down over the years from the original builders who created these unique vessels.
